|
A British flint dueling pistol converted to a military officer's campaign pistol with the following description: The 9" oval barrel has a flat top rib with a silver blade front and V notch rear sight and a smooth .69 caliber bore. The single neck hammer shows an old repair below the bottom jaw. The lock plate is marked Clark and the barrel reads Clark Holborn. The book "Gunmakers of London 1350- 1850" lists 4 different spellings of the name Clark. Wattell Clarke working at various Holborn addresses 1785-1815 which would be correct for this gun. Walnut 1/2 stocked with pewter nose cap and a pewter butt cap in the shape of a daisy with 8 petals, single wedge fastened with nickel silver escutcheons. Barrel proofs are crowns over P and V as per numbers 12 & 4 on page 281 in "British Military Firearms 1650-1850" by Howard L. Blackmore. The flat sided grip would suggest 1790-1800. The rosewood ramrod has a single brass tip. The lock plate is topped at the rear and has a sliding wedge safety that can be engaged at 1/2 cock. A martial panoply has been engraved on the top tang.
