Maker: Otis A. Smith Model: Antique

A solid frame .32 rimfire that is in a box labeled "Smith New Revolver 32-100 Caliber. Nickel plated, rubber handle." The cylinder pin can only be withdrawn by pushing the screw in the frame in front of the cylinder. The serial number is a very low "14" . We feel that this gun is an early, almost prototype piece. The No 14 appears on the frame, trigger and grips. The screw that fastens the grips appears to be a wood screw instead of the normal machine screw. All frame and barrel components are cast as one piece and show minute casting flaws which is normal for this type of construction. The spur trigger is blue and the hammer is case hardened. The cylinder had to be removed for loading and extraction of fired cartridges with the cylinder pin used as an extractor. A.A. Smith is listed a moving from Middlefield to Rockfall, Connecticut in 1879 and produced several revolver models until the turn of the century. The frame top is marked "O.A. Smith Rockfall, Conn." The black hard rubber grips are checkered with a star around the center screw and the initials "OAS" at the top. Smith held many patents for spur trigger and double action revolvers to quote Flayderman "although classed as "suicide specials" quite a few models were of excellent quality and are due better recognition than they have had." In a maroon color paper box with black printed yellow/green label, the revolver retains over 99% nickel finish with most minor flaking. The grips grade near new. the frame was evidently cast of brass or bronze as the nickel finish did not "take" in some areas inside the frame and this coloration shows through. This is obviously one of the first of Smith's "new" revolvers. An interesting boxed prototype in near new condition. Antique
